Dialysis is used for end-stage kidney failure, when kidneys lose about 85% to 90% of their function. It is also used to address acute kidney injury. If there is a sudden, temporary loss of kidney function, and can be used also to rapidly remove certain drugs, toxins, or poisons from the blood.
RCK Dialysis Centre:
While over 22 million people in Pakistan suffer from some form of kidney-related disease, experts indicate that an estimate of people requiring dialysis or transplantation may be close to 50,000 annually. However ongoing dialysis treatment is not affordable by the majority of people, and as such, any facility providing free or heavily subsidized treatment is doing a great humanitarian service. With this vital need of society in mind, RCK conceived a project for establishing a Dialysis Centre, in partnership with the Memon Medical Institute Hospital, to be funded through a Rotary Global Grant.
The total grant approved was US$ 437,400.00. Thirty-five percent of the grant amount was contributed by RCK members and friends, another 35% was contributed by other international Rotary clubs and balance 30% was contributed by Rotary International.
On 9th February 2022, the Rotary Dialysis Centre at the MMIH was inaugurated by TRF Trustee Aziz Memon, and Rtn. Mohammad Ajaz Saya (also the Chairman of the MMIH).
The grant enabled the procurement of 25 dialysis machines. The cost of the infrastructure and associated equipment was met by MMIH itself and its own sponsors. Since March 2022, the Dialysis Centre has conducted 90,000+ dialysis sessions. All operations are done by MMIH staff and MMIH donors contribute to the costs. Till May 2026, an amount of PKR 360 million has been spent on providing free treatment to the patients.
The Dialysis Project is in line with Rotary’s Focus Area of Fighting Disease, and directly supports improvement and expansion of access to healthcare to the less-privileged in society,
