World Environment Day, observed annually on 5 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 following the landmark Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. First celebrated in 1973 under the theme “Only One Earth,” the initiative was envisioned as a global platform to encourage environmental awareness and collective responsibility.
This year’s World Environment Day theme is #ClimateAction, stressing that climate change and the environmental concerns are no longer a distant scenario‚ but our everyday reality. Increasing temperatures‚ prolonged heatwaves‚ rapidly melting glaciers‚ depleting forests‚ wildfires‚ air pollution, are all indicators that urgent action is needed, without which‚ the number of people exposed to harmful air pollution could increase by 50% in this decade and levels of plastic pollution entering marine ecosystems can almost triple by 2040.
The environmental crisis is not limited to climate only‚ but includes also public health‚ food‚ water‚ biodiversity‚ and the economy. The depletion of ecosystems‚ intensifying greenhouse gas emissions‚ and damaging the ozone layer are literally an existential threat to life on Earth.
Globally‚ 24 percent of all deaths are caused by environmental factors. Ninety-nine percent of the world’s population is exposed to air pollution levels exceeding WHO guideline limits. Due to air pollution‚ respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are the leading environmental cause of death in Pakistan‚ accounting for about 135‚000-140‚000 premature deaths annually.
The environmental recovery is not only the responsibility of the government or international organizations. The change requires also individual actions to combat the ongoing climate crisis. We can easily limit the use of single-use plastics‚ walk short distances instead of driving‚ plant trees, and save energy consumption, yet the biggest task is to raise awareness.
This philosophy is also in line with the work done on sustainability by Rotary International which has recently added environment as an area of focus. Over the last five years‚ Rotary has invested $18 million in global environmental projects like habitat restoration‚ freshwater conservation‚ plantation campaigns‚ sustainable agricultural practices‚ climate change mitigation‚ pollution abatement‚ and environmental education. Through its partnership with UNEP under the Community Action for Fresh Water initiative, Rotary clubs globally are also contributing toward the protection and restoration of freshwater ecosystems.
The Rotary Club of Karachi too has carried out various activities from time to time for environmental protection, including plantation drives, beach-cleaning, and several schemes for providing clean drinking water to communities.
Climate change and environmental degradation are common challenges that must be seen‚ understood, and addressed as a single global phenomenon․ The future of our environment will not be shaped by declarations alone, but by the everyday choices we make, and the collective will we demonstrate to protect the one Earth we all share.
